Frederick Charles Stephenson was the second child of Thomas Stephenson & Ann Wainwright born July 17th, 1870 at Preston Junction, Eaglescliffe, Co Durham.
In 1871 Frederick (listed as Charles) was living with his parents and older brother Henry at 20 East St, Stockton.
Charles was still living at home in 1881 at 13 Lawson St, Stockton with his 3 brothers, a sister & parents.
Frederick enlisted with the Northumberland Fusiliers in February 1888. His occupation at that time was given as labourer. Frederick’s military records show that he was arrested for assault in June 1890 for which he was imprisoned for 60 days. After returning to duty he was again found guilty of breaking out of barracks in August 1890 for which he served 21 days before returning to duty in September. Frederick served in India from 1890 to 1895 when he left the Fusiliers. He was recalled to Army Service under special Army order in 1899 when he undertook a period of engagement in South Africa.
Frederick married Kate Elizabeth Christon on October 26th, 1897 at the United Methodist Free Church, Grange Rd, Middlesbrough. Kate was born June 11th, 1874 at 99 Wilson St, Middlesbrough, the daughter of Ann Amelia Coupland & John Christon, a labourer.
In 1901 Frederick (listed as Fred) & Kate were living at 4 Harrison’s Square, Darlington & Fred was now a labourer at the railway engine works. They had a 2 year old daughter Florence.
Sadly Kate died in July-September 1903, aged 29, at Middlesbrough.
In 1911 daughter Florence Annie was staying with her grandmother, Annie Amelia Christon, at Killinghall, Middleton-St-George, Darlington. Annie Amelia’s husband was now Robert Christon, who she had married in 1902.
Frederick died in 1915 at Middlesbrough, aged 45.
Daughter Florence Annie married Edward Coultish in July-September 1918 at Darlington & they were to have 3 sons.
Daughter Dorothy Kate worked as a cook at Sedburgh School, Yorks & had a daughter Dorothy Morley Stephenson in 1924 (ref. Jillian Blakey, Ancestry.co.uk). She subsequently married Henry Gibson on September 7th, 1927 at Middlesbrough Registry Office & they had 3 children.
